The big smoke
One of the greatest things about London is its multi-cultural mix. And in a city as old as London, you’re surrounded by history in the shape of the architecture of the ages. This is the reason why, even though I no longer live in London, I still return to ‘The Big Smoke’ time and time again. Paraphrasing the old saying ‘You can take the boy out of the city, but you can’t take the city out of the boy’.
I can walk the streets of London for hours on end, finding new places to ex...
We love Sandy's beautiful large format shots, they always seem to have hidden depths. We are excited that he agreed to take part in the In Focus / Lockdown Sessions series and become our 20th interviewee.

There’s a few I could post that I feel encapsulate the sort of feeling or thought process I have when I’m working on photos, but for me, so far? It’s this image.
Photography means a lot of di...

In some respects photography could be explained as one massive scientific research project, capturing data to show the state of atoms and ho...

An Englishman in New York
As an Englishman in New York, I have always been in awe of the city I now call home. You could be uptown at a swanky Park Ave dinner party one moment and in a raucous Lower East Side dive bar sinking $3 PBR lagers the next. It is just so easy to get around this magical island - a major part of its charm and thrill. The stereotypes of New York’s profound energy, diversity and unrelenting drive are all true. This has provided daily inspiration me to pick up my Contax and go shoot ...
It’s weird, if not taboo to tell someone that I learnt to shoot digital before learning how to shoot film. I guess this may be the case for many of us in the digital era of photography. My journey into photography is what I like to call a beautiful accident or a series of fortunate events. When a photographer cancelled last minute for a charity event organised by a close friend of mine in 2017 I found myself stepping in to fill the spot. I knew absolutely nothing about photography, how to use a DSLR or ev...
A Covid-19 Isolation Photography Series
Before and After is a photography series that features the abandoned streets of Toronto captured during the coronavirus pandemic. During lockdown I spent four months isolated in a small apartment downtown and had the majority of my life put on pause.
When phase 1 of reopening started I was eager to get back outside, to get back to normal life. Much to my surprise when I left my apartment, the streets were completely abandoned. It was a surreal version of our new r...
My Darkroom
I have always liked the quote of the master printer Ansel Adams “Photography is like music, the negative is the score and the print is its performance”.
Every performance is different. That’s so true, the prints I do now I are often different from the ones I did a few years ago. Better technique, more experience perhaps, but more likely my mood and interpretation of the image has changed.
Good advice
When I was starting my photographic practice I used to buy my ILFORD materials...
