In our digital age, film photography can appear to be expensive and risky but it has challenged me to learn the process involved in taking a photo that captures my intent and tells a story, creating a real sense of achievement.
Over the past year, my confidence in using the medium has grown which is driving me to experiment more. In a world where the media can manipulate colours to affect the audience’s perception, black and white film uses alternative techniques. For example, in colour, red often conn...
This week for our 46th In Focus interview we are talking to Clara Araujo. A fine art photographer from Brazil whose images explore the dualities and other aspects of the human psyche.

It’s really hard to pick just one… but probably this self portrait:

For this week's #ilfordphoto #fridayfavourites theme we chose #35mmxp2. We don't think that this extremely versatile C41 process film gets the love it deserves. It delivers excellent results, including well-defined highlights and shadows, even in unpredictable lighting or high-contrast scenes. And, is also special in that you can shoot at different speeds from ISO 50 to 800 on the same roll of film and process as standard C41.

Today in our 8th Behind the Film interview we talk to Mike Bain. One of our longer serving team members, Mike started in our tech team and now looks after North America. He has probably forgotten more about film photography and darkroom printing than some of us will ever learn!
Who are you? What’s your job title HARMAN technology and how long have you worked here?
My name is Mike Bain and I am the Harman technology rep for North America. I have been with the company for 33 years.

Rule breaker
The chemigram process allows any photographer to be experimental, free and a little bit of a rule breaker. As a photographer who is passionate about the traditional printing process, I was always taught that my prints should be clean and crisp. So, coming across a process that allows you to be messy, hands on and experimental makes me feel like a child again.
My wonderful friend introduced me to this technique and I have been completely blown away by the atmosphere you can create. Also, thi...

Time to go green?
As the threat of the climate crisis grows each day - we must strive for sustainability in all aspects of life. But when standing atop a cliff shakily clutching your 5x4 camera, or working under the red light of your local darkroom - sustainability can seem like a distant concern, reserved for those in stuffy offices or holding placards outside of parliament.
As analogue photography has always been eager to embrace innovation in the face of change - is it time to go green?
My name is...
I'm sure that many of us have taken a shot and then once we've processed it spotted something or someone that we didn't realise was in frame when we took it. It's these moments that we asked you to share with us today for #ilfordphoto #fridayfavourites #unexpected.

Melanie King was first introduced to us by Lucy Ridges, and since then we have heard her name mentioned from several different people. It was fantastic to be able to learn a little more about her when she agreed to take part in this series.
